In an era of rapidly changing cultural tastes, Bharatanatyam dancer and educator Chitra Rinnesh has built a quiet but steady legacy in South India’s classical arts ecosystem. Since 2012, she has been running Rathinasabha Music & Dance Academy, an institution that trains young aspirants in the rigours of traditional performance while encouraging them to explore their own creative voice.

Building an academy

Rathinasabha Music & Dance Academy began as a focused effort to give structured training in music and dance to children and young adults in and around her community. Over the years, it has evolved into a space where classical discipline and individual expression coexist, with Bharatanatyam at the core of its training philosophy. Students who enter the academy encounter not only technique but also the cultural context and values that underpin Indian classical performance.

Scholar and performer

Chitra’s profile stands out for the way it combines academic strength and artistic depth. She holds a BSc and BEd in Mathematics, reflecting a strong grounding in logic, structure, and pedagogy that directly informs her work as an educator. Complementing this is a BPA in Bharatanatyam, which gives her performance practice a solid theoretical and historical base and positions her as both practitioner and scholar.

Voice beyond the stage

Off stage, Chitra engages deeply with the written word. Reading and listening to poetry form a significant part of her daily routine, and she has written several poems in Tamil that reflect her observations and inner world. This engagement with literature feeds back into her dance, strengthening her abhinaya (expressive) work and helping her communicate layered emotion through movement.

Recognitions and honours

Her contribution to the arts has been acknowledged by regional cultural bodies. Chitra has received an award from Villupuram Paavendar Peravai for excellence in the field of art, recognising both her performance and her role in mentoring younger artists. In 2025, she was conferred the Pride of Pondicherry Award, underscoring her position as a cultural ambassador for the region and a visible face of its artistic aspirations.

Expanding her artistic canvas

In recent years, Chitra has stepped beyond the conventional spaces associated with classical dance. She has participated in pageants, bringing classical poise and stage presence to a more contemporary public platform. She has also been part of a short film, signalling a growing interest in visual storytelling and in taking classical sensibilities into new media formats that reach wider audiences.
