Sparsh Dipak Nagargoje: The Rising Cricket Star from Bedag Who Once Dismissed His Own Father

Bedag, a small village in Miraj taluka of Sangli district, is home to a young cricketer with a big dream. At just 15, Sparsh Dipak Nagargoje is already working towards making a name for himself in the sport he loves. A Class 10 student at New English School, Rayat Shikshan Sanstha, Bedag, Sparsh is balancing his academics with a serious commitment to cricket. His ambition goes beyond becoming a good cricketer — he dreams of one day representing India. His selection for the Maharashtra Professional Cricket League (MPCL) has become an important milestone in that journey.

Cricket Was Introduced to Him at Home

Cricket was never an unfamiliar game for Sparsh. His father and uncle both play tennis-ball cricket, so the sport was always a part of his surroundings. He first held a cricket bat when he was just three years old. Sparsh may not remember that moment himself, but his father still recalls it with pride. His father and uncle became his first cricket mentors. They taught him the basics of the game, but more importantly, they taught him the value of discipline, consistency and regular practice. One piece of advice has stayed with Sparsh throughout his journey: Whatever the circumstances, never miss your practice.

Limited Space, Unlimited Ambition

Sparsh’s cricket journey began in a small space outside his home. There was no large ground and the facilities were limited, but his determination was never limited by his circumstances. Playing competitive matches often meant travelling hundreds of kilometres from home. On some occasions, the family travelled as far as 500 kilometres for matches. His father would put aside his own work and responsibilities to make sure Sparsh could get the opportunity to play. His school also played an important role by supporting his cricketing ambitions rather than creating obstacles. One of the biggest challenges, however, was managing the demanding daily routine. Sparsh’s cricket academy is around 40 kilometres from his home. His school would finish at around 5 p.m., after which he would travel another 40 kilometres to reach the academy for practice and then make the journey back home. It was a tiring routine — school throughout the day, followed by a long journey for training and another journey back. But Sparsh never allowed the fatigue to become an excuse. Watching his parents work so hard to support his dream only strengthened his determination to keep going.

MPCL Selection and the First Hug for His Father

Being selected for a professional platform like the Maharashtra Professional Cricket League was a special moment for Sparsh and his family. When he first heard that he had been selected, it took him a few moments to fully believe the news. Sparsh particularly appreciates the transparent and merit-based nature of the selection process. The first person he hugged after learning about his selection was his father. It wasn’t just an emotional reaction to good news. Sparsh had personally witnessed the time, travel, effort and sacrifices his father had made throughout his cricketing journey. For Sparsh, his parents have played the biggest role in helping him reach this stage. His school also celebrated his achievement and continued to support his development. He was given special permission to reach the ground three hours earlier so that he could dedicate additional time to practice.

Developing Himself as an All-Rounder

Sparsh is an all-rounder who bats and bowls right-handed. He particularly enjoys batting at No. 3, where he can take responsibility for building an innings. As a bowler, he works on both spin and fast bowling. He is also focusing on developing the mindset required to build a complete innings as a batsman. For him, batting is not just about scoring quickly. He is learning how to build an innings from the beginning, understand the situation, control the pace of his batting and play a substantial knock for his team. His training routine is equally disciplined. Sparsh puts in around four hours of practice every day — approximately one hour of warm-up, one hour of bowling and two hours of batting. His favourite Indian cricketer is Virat Kohli. Sparsh admires Kohli’s discipline, work ethic and complete commitment to the game.

Learning From Failure

Not every match goes according to plan, and Sparsh has already experienced that side of competitive cricket. Last month, during a final, he was dismissed early at a time when his team needed him. His dismissal had an impact on the team’s performance. Instead of allowing the setback to discourage him, Sparsh chose to learn from it. During his free time, he watches the batting of players such as Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid. He also discusses his mistakes and areas for improvement with his teammates. One habit he has never forgotten is seeking the blessings of his parents before every important match.

From the IPL to Representing India

Sparsh has a clear vision for his future. He wants to use opportunities like MPCL to prove himself, progress towards the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Ranji Trophy, and eventually earn the opportunity to represent India. He believes that many talented young cricketers never get the chance to showcase their abilities simply because they lack access to the right platform and opportunities. For such players, leagues like MPCL can provide an important pathway to competitive cricket.

The Memory of Dismissing His Own Father

Among the many memories Sparsh has collected during his cricket journey, one stands out from all the rest. When he was 13, Sparsh challenged his own father to a game of cricket — and managed to dismiss him. For a boy who learned the game from his father, getting the opportunity to bowl him out was both a proud and amusing moment. The man who gave him his first cricket lessons had now become the batsman he had managed to dismiss. It remains one of those special cricketing memories that Sparsh is unlikely to forget.

From Bedag to MPCL

Sparsh’s journey from a small village in Sangli to a professional cricket platform has not been easy. Limited practice space, long-distance travel, school responsibilities, demanding training schedules and the constant effort required to compete — he has faced all of these challenges along the way. His family and school have been a strong support system. But at the centre of this entire journey is Sparsh himself — his discipline, determination and willingness to keep working. Today, MPCL has given him an opportunity to take another important step towards his cricketing ambitions. His journey began in the grounds around Bedag. It has now reached a professional cricket platform, opening the door to bigger possibilities. Where the journey takes him next will depend on what lies ahead. But Sparsh’s story already carries a powerful message: A village may be small, but dreams never have to be. And when you are willing to work for those dreams every day, no distance is too great and no beginning is too small.
